EI: GENOS Emotional Intelligence
The GENOS Emotional Intelligence Model
Who are the people behind the GENOS Emotional Intelligence model?
 | The GENOS Emotional Intelligence model was developed by two key Australian researchers, Dr Ben Palmer and Professor Con Stough.
| | Professor Stough is the Director of Neurosciences at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia and heads up The Brain Sciences Institute there.
| | Dr Ben Palmer was one of his PhD students who devoted his time, in the mid 1990s. to researching Emotional Intelligence and developing an Emotional Intelligence assessment.
| | He has since refined this and developed the GENOS 360 Emotional Intelligence assessment and the GENOS Emotional Intelligence self-report measure.
| | Dr Palmer is now the CEO of GENOS International, based in Sydney.
|
|
|
What lies at the core of the GENOS model?
 | The model was officially launched after several years of research in 2002.
| | Dr Ben Palmer, Professor Con Stough, Dr Gilles Gignac and other researchers with whom they work are extensively researching Emotional Intelligence, and specifically Emotional Intelligence in the workplace.
|
They have differentiated seven dimensions of EI and developed an assessment tool to measure each one.
- Emotional self-awareness.
- Emotional expression.
- Emotional awareness of others.
- Emotional reasoning.
- Emotional self-management.
- Emotional management of others.
- Emotional self-control.
Each of these is described in more depth elsewhere on this site.
I have been personally trained by Dr Ben Palmer and am accredited in the use of the GENOS Emotional Intelligence Assessments. I find it a very practical model.

Where can I find more information on the GENOS Emotional Intelligence model?
 | One of the most useful texts describing it can be found in the chapter by Palmer, B. R., Stough, C. Harmer, R., & Gignac, G. E. "Genos emotional intelligence inventory: A measure designed specifically for workplace applications." In the book by C. Stough, D. Saklofske, &, J. Parker (Ed.), Assessing emotional intelligence: Theory, research and applications. Pages 103-118. Publisher: Springer, New York. 2009. ISBN: 1572-5672
|
 | The chapter explains the basis of the Genos EI assessment and its exclusive focus on Emotional Intelligence behaviours in the workplace. It provides example items from the assessment, a description of the 7 levels, plus reliability and validity measures, and short form items for research purposes.

What importance do they place on Emotional Intelligence?
GENOS states:
