1. Living life to the full.

Does it matter what age you are? Do you let your age limit you in any way? I consider it a privilege to be 53 years old. Some of my friends have died at a younger age and I think every year we have is a gift to be celebrated. Yet so many of us put ourselves down for being "old" or "too young". I've heard 50 year olds say "I'm too old to learn about that now" when they're talking about using the internet. I've heard a woman in her 40s tell me "I can't expect to have energy like I did when I was younger". I know people in their twenties who won't approach older people when they are networking, for example, because they think the other person won't be interested. This is all sad!

People can become stuck in their ways, and limit what they do, not because of physical constraints but because of psychological ones. And yet, why limit your life because of your age? Are you making the most of your life irrespective of your age? I hope so. The tips section contains lots of tips on how to have an inspired life.

2. Latest news: "Gaining media publicity" - New E-book - give your input.

I am helping a voluntary organisation at the moment to gain some media publicity for a conference they are putting on. As a consequence of this I have been learning about the problems people face when trying to get radio or press interviews and how little understanding there is on how the media works. I have also been training some of their people on how to be interviewed so they can stay in control and know what to say. As a consequence I have started writing an E-book on gaining media publicity and being interviewed successfully on the radio and in the print media. This will be aimed at community organisations, authors, people with products and services, professional bodies, and more - anyone who is inexperienced in handling the media but for whom there could be significant advantages in so doing.

At this stage I welcome any stories you have of what has worked for you in getting on the media, or what has gone wrong for you when being interviewed. I have a stash of my own experiences from my last 25 years or so but the more the better. Please send them to and if they are published in the book a free E-book will be yours - to the value of $25.

3. Top tips on how to have an inspired life.

Tip A. Set yourself a goal.

The first step to celebrating every year you have and living it to the full is to actually decide that this is what you will do. Making the determination to celebrate your age is a big step forward. Once the goal is set then you have to counter the forces that will try to tell you that you're too old or too young. It will mean going out there and declaring to the world, "I'm this old and proud of it!"

Tip B. Have mentors.

All around you are people who are your age and who are articulate, achieving and able. Search them out and have them as your mentors. You don't have to personally know them - it can be the Rolling Stones if you wish. I remember seeing Tina Turner's 60th birthday concert and thinking, "Wow! Can that woman dance!" How fabulous at 60. She's a mentor. Then I was listening to a riveting radio interview recently and was thoroughly engaged in the dialogue between Philip Adams (Radio National presenter) and a man, who was unknown to me. Two great brains in the dialogue. Who is he talking to I kept asking myself? And then I discovered it was Gough Whitlam, one of our former and most controversial prime ministers. He'd just given a major speech in Sydney. And what was remarkable about this? He is 90. He's a mentor. And then one of my favourite TV hosts, Michael Parkinson, he's smooth, articulate and over 70. Another mentor! So find some mentors to inspire you and to remind you as to what is possible.

Tip C. Persevere through your problems.

If you want to live an inspired life and a long life of quality then you have to do things to reduce your problems. This requires time, effort and dedication. It may be you have relationship problems, health problems, financial problems, family difficulties, job loss, or there is something you don't like about yourself, ... whatever it is ... if you have problems, persevere until you've found the best solution for you. It is too easy to give up and just accept the status quo - don't. Dig your heels in. Mount your determination and put in the effort. I talk a lot about how important this is in "Midlife and Happiness", our feature book of the fortnight, and I give examples from my own life. Don't give up - ever!

Tip D. Look after yourself.

I was talking to a lovely lady recently and noticed she was drinking a lot of diet soft drinks. I had read some research into the possible damaging effects of these drinks and mentioned it to her. She drinks a lot of it. And her response was "I'm 50 now, who cares". I do. I care that, whatever your age, you do what you can to look after yourself because then your quality of life improves. It may not keep you alive for longer - but to get the best out of your life - what you put into your body can influence the amount of energy you have, how you feel about yourself and how inspired you feel at the start of each day. And this applies to yourself whether you are 20, 30 or 70! What you put into your body is your body.

Tip E. Do what's important.

There is so much in our lives that is trivial - that is enticing and yet unimportant. I know I am like everyone else: I can get sucked into it. So what brings you most satisfaction rather than what is distraction? What gives you purpose and meaning in your life? What gives you a sense of accomplishment, of doing something worthwhile? Work it out. And do it. When you do what's important your self-esteem and energy can both increase and you can live an inspired life no matter what your age is.

5. Featured Electronic book (E-book) of the fortnight, plus a free tip ...

A Master of Ceremonies. The beginner's guide to being a brilliant MC.

Everything you need to know about being a Master of Ceremony for anyone who isn't experienced in doing it. There are sample introductions, checklists on what to prepare 14 days, 7 days and 1 day before; sample thank-yous, practical exercises on script reading, tips on using a microphone, advice on how to use humour, tips on how to write good introductions and much, much more.

Yesterday I received a wonderful e-mail out of the blue, from someone I do not know, about "A master of ceremony." I have printed it here, in full, because it includes tips from the book and an explanation as to how it has been useful. I like you to hear from other people and not just me. Thanks to Calvin!

It was awesome!!!

Your e-book prepared & equipped me with everything I needed to make this a successful event, (checking the mic, being able to address changes in the agenda, relating to the audience, building up the speakers, etc.)

As fate would have it, the mic was inadequate and some of the people scheduled to speak were unable to make it, and your e-book warned me to be ready to act, (and I did).

Instead of panic, we had the mics replaced, and I began to recruit replacements. I personally filled in for one of the absentees (I had more material than I needed in case this happened).

I am so glad I invested in your book. I do not want to think about what could have happened if I did not have the knowledge acquired from it. We had an awesome time. Your e-book reminded me to remember not to overdo it as the MC (it's hard to move out of the way when you have the audience flowing with you), and that the main speaker should be the one they anticipate and remember. The evening was filled with energy and enthusiasm, and even with the change in the agenda, the night flowed without a flaw.

My wife and I are still smiling at how much fun we had. The fact that I was able to retrieve and print your e-book immediately, (to carry with me), allowed me to prepare in time to make this a positive memorable event.

Again, Thank you.
