The best thing about being over 40

Both my daughters are grown up so I have a lot more time to pursue my own interests and travel.

The worst thing about being over 40

My husband passed away at the end of January this year after a long illness, I nursed him for a long time and hated watching the loss of dignity which comes with some forms of cancer - but I miss him dearly and his friendship.

My one regret

There are no regrets for me - life is a gift and I try and enjoy each day.

What I know now that I wish I'd known at 21

That people especially family are more important than material things.

How I'll celebrate my next birthday

I will be 53 on the 1st July 2003 and I expect I will celebrate it with my daughters and my Australian son-in-law who now lives in the U.K. but comes from the Gold Coast.

One thing I've achieved since being 40

I've travelled to Australia three times to see my daughter when she was living on the Gold Coast and I visited Uluru and snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef.

My goals for the next 10 years

To continue to develop spiritually and to visit Egypt, Florence and Venice. I would also like to go to the U.S. and visit some of their national parks. Egypt is a must though because I'm keen on Egyptology. I'd also love to travel to India.

How I keep healthy

I now do a job that is a lot less stressful than the job I loved at social services, but my health is a lot better. I also do pilates at home and have started line dancing twice a week. I don't smoke, drink very little alcohol and try and eat healthily. I also meditate regularly.

The people who inspire me

Nelson Mandela - I have a lot of respect and admiration for this man. Kofi Anhan - the world needs more diplomats like him, unfortunately these men are rare commodities. My daughters also inspire me, my eldest lived for 2 years in Northern Pakistan near Kashmir and now works for Pfeiser in the U.K. My youngest spent two years out in Australia where she married before returning to the U.K. Both she and her husband have got good jobs over here and have bought a house of their own.

Favourite hobby

Reading - non-fiction and fiction. And music. I used to play piano as a child and my daughters play sax, flute, piano and Piccolo. I am very interested in meditation, India, Astronomy and physics but do not know that much about the two latter subjects, am still learning.

Favourite TV/Radio programme or magazine

I don't watch that much TV but I like wildlife documentaries that the BBC make. I don't listen to the radio much at the moment and the only magazines I tend to read are to do with health.

Favourite Music

I like classical, Glen Miller, most music in fact, e.g. Andrew Botchelli, Celine Dion, Pavarotti, Glen Miller, Motown music from the 60s, Larry Adler's Rhapsody In Blue. I particularly like Tony O'Connor for relaxing.

My advice to other people in midlife

I'm not a religious person but I am spiritual and quite psychic and whilst I do not intend doing anything to develop this I am convinced that there are other dimensions and that we go on, so I think there is a lot to look forward to. I also believe that if there are things you still want to do - now is the time to do them so that there are no regrets later.

One of my favourite sayings

Never forget to tell your family how much you love them.
