EI: Courses - Become Engaged - Better stakeholder relations
Become Engaged - Better stakeholder relations
Overview
Stakeholder relations can be fraught with difficulty, disagreements and disatisfaction. How can applying the skills of emotional intelligence help?
Behaviour is often driven by emotions and that includes the behaviour of stakeholders. If you have presented an idea or proposal to them and they have rejected it, emotions will have contributed to this behaviour. If they are avoiding you, putting you under undue pressure or simply being obstructive emotions will also be contributing.
You may have repeatedly tried to address the problems with rational arguements but found that your facts, figures and logical reasoning failed to make a difference, or even made the situation worse.
Complaints and objections can be 80% emotions and only 20% facts, so wouldn't it make more sense to manage the emotions as well?
Recognising, understanding and responding effectively to stakeholder emotions may be what's needed. By engaging your stakeholders at an emotional level and showing understanding of their emotional drivers and needs, you may be able to turn the situation around much faster.
Leave them feeling important and understood, and see what happens! Having the skills of emotional intelligence in your stakeholder relations kit is one more tool for success.
Of course, if all your stakeholder relationships are easy, harmonious and straightforward you don't need this programme!
This programme covers mainly EI dimension three: "Emotional awareness of others" and EI dimension six: "Emotional management of others" on the Genos emotional intelligence model.

How will you learn?
 | This is an interactive, practical and skills-based programme; it is not a lecture.
| | You will be invited to bring with you examples of stakeholder relations that are working really well, and those that aren't. These will form part of the discussion and exercises.
| | You'll be given the opportunity to emotionally profile your own stakeholders and gain group input.
| | You will be invited to prepare for specific upcoming interactions which you forsee may be difficult.
| | Personal examples and stories of direct relevance will be included.
| | There will be time for questions and demonstrations.
| | It will not be boring!

What do others think?
The Shire of Busselton employed Rachel to present to our combined Executive and management team. We were so impressed with her skills that she ended up becoming an integral part of our Leadership development program.
What impressed me in particular was her ability to be flexible to the needs of the group. All presentations were well researched and prepared in advance however, Rachel did not need, as other presenters do, to stick rigidly to a pre-prepared script but instead was able to adjust to the needs of the group as she went. She was also really good at handling difficult questions from a potentially cynical audience.
Her enthusiasm, dedication and obvious people skills were a credit to her. As a consequence of her presentations many, including all of the Executive team and CEO, followed up with one-on-one coaching sessions with her too.
Maxine Palmer, Manager Economic & Strategic Development, Shire Busselton.

How long is the programme?
2 half days, or as negotiated. Longer if required.
1-1 or 1-2 coaching is also available in the same area and is particularly useful if people are going to the same stakeholder meeting, presentation or event.
|
How many can attend?
This is negotiable. Small groups, preferably around 6-12, e.g the executive team.
However a larger group can be accommodated with some changes to the format.
