Ten tips on how to be proud of your age, by Rachel Green
There are many advantages to getting older, yet so many of us try to hide our age as we become older. Instead, here are 10 tips to help you be proud of your age irrespective of how old you are.
- Celebrate with others
Invite others to celebrate with you - your achievements, your birthdays, your new wisdom. Instead of ignoring your birthdays, encourage others to celebrate each birthday with you and spread a positive message about ageing. The more of us that do this, the easier it will become.
- List 10 things you know
List 10 new things you know now that you didn't know when you were younger.
- List 10 experiences
List 10 experiences you've had in your life in the last 10 years that you hadn't had earlier.
- Say your age
Be willing to tell anyone who asks or may be interested how old you are. Be proud of your age, don't hide it.
- Know you've been promoted
Consider every extra year you have as a promotion from God!
- Find role models
Find role models who are older than you and who have zest and energy for life and are still contributing to life in a meaningful way. Read about them, remind yourself of what they've done, be inspired by them and tell other people about them. Spread the word about positive role models rather than passing on the negative stereotypes about older people. (By older, read 10 years older than you!)
- Remember those who've died young
List 5 people you know of who were younger than you that have died. Express thanks for the extra years you've had that they haven't.
- Be thankful for each day
Express thanks for the good things in your life on this day and then the next day - rather than worrying about what will happen to you down the track.
- Don't hide your age
Resist the temptation to hide your age, e.g. look beautiful with grey hair, look beautiful without a face lift, allow the character lines on your face to tell the story of your life. If there are too many worry lines, smile!
- Write to the newspapers
Write to the magazines that only have young skinny models, expressing your disappointment in the lack of models over 40. Write to the newspapers expressing the value of people in midlife when you read an article presenting negative stereotypes for this age group. Write to employment agencies who won't put people over 40 on their books explaining the value to the workforce of the over 40's. Be willing to speak out and stand tall. Be proud of your age.
